Novice / Refresher (optional) Bronze Level
These one day courses are always available as an optional extra (cost £80) on the Friday before a silver course.
They are ideal for anyone new to map reading and also for those with some experience who want to briefly go back to the basics, as a refresher.
These one day courses cover an introduction to map reading and basic compass skills with plenty of time to practice in the outdoors and are designed to bring you up to the standard required so you can comfortably join the Silver Lever course for the following two days.

Intermediate / Silver Level (our most popular courses)
The 2 day Intermediate course is designed to improve your map reading and learn, or improve, your compass skills. You will learn how to combine the use of a map and compass together enabling you to navigate in good or bad visibility. You don’t need to have used a compass before as the course will take you through everything step by step.
If you have some experience in map reading and compass work you’ll find that revisiting the basics before moving on to more advanced techniques is extremely useful.
Advanced / Gold Level
This is a 3 day course and is ideal for experienced navigators. You’ll have the opportunity to gain, and practice, the techniques required to navigate in complex terrain using sound and safe navigation strategies.
Whatever your sport, if you’re involved in outdoor activities, the ability to competently and safely navigate using a map and compass is a skill which everyone should (must) have.
A map and compass will always work, even when your phone or GPS won’t.
Even when all you electronic equipment has failed (which it will do) you still MUST always be able to answer these five questions:
- Where am I?
- Where am going to?
- What will it be like on the route and what will I see?
- How will I know when I’ve arrived?
- What will I do if I get lost?
