Just finished one of The Map Reading Co’s Silver map-reading courses this weekend. Although I sort of knew the basics I wasn’t confident in navigating. It was excellent to recap on the basics at the start to iron out important areas of misunderstanding or gaps in knowledge. As others as said, The instructor was enthusiastic and passionate about sharing their navigation skills. Importantly they were immensely patient. They instil a ‘no question is too daft’ atmosphere and take care to ensure that everyone has not only grasped the key concepts but is able to apply the skills practically. I would thoroughly recommend the Map Reading Co if you’re wanting to learn how to navigate effectively. I now feel much more confident and enthused to keep practising.

Again thanks a million for a superb weekend where the revision on past skills and learning new stuff was fab. Throughly enjoyed both days and thought you ran the course well above my expectations.

I could read a map and use a compass before I went on the course, LoL – OK I should have said I “thought” I could read a map and use a compass, but guess what now but now I can do both “correctly”.
Course was brilliant, instructor was excellent, weather was kind (the forecast was for rain, and that didn’t happen), location was perfect.
Ha Ha I sound like an advert. I’m trying to think of something negative (as I think you’re meant, to even it up) but I can’t.
Oh wait, I’ve thought of something. I dropped my sandwiches in some sheep poo. So I want to complain, grrrrrrr, why didn’t the Map reading Co. arrange for the sheep to wear nappies.

When I booked the course I half expected it to be quite theory heavy and a bit dull, but I couldn’t have been more wrong! On the weekend we did cover lots of theory but it was delivered in a relaxed and fun way. We had a small group and were given plenty of time to practice (and make mistakes) navigating and leading. It was a lot less physically demanding than I thought, which allowed us to concentrate more on the actual content of the course.
All in all a fun weekend which I thoroughly enjoyed and I would recommend it to anyone who spends time outdoors.

I did the bronze course in the Stretton hills and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend from start to finish. The instructor was extremely accommodating to both myself and other participants, always happy to answer any questions with comprehensive explanations. I found myself not only learning new things but also feeling so much clearer in my understanding of things I thought I already knew! Could not recommend these courses enough to anyone looking to further their skills in map reading and navigation.

A fantastic weekend learning new skills which were well explained. Nothing is designed to catch you off guard, for example if you’re not sure of a location, but more about helping you learn and understand how to use the skills in those situations.

I really would recommend anyone who walks in the outdoors to go on one of these courses. I had some idea how to read a map before the course, but now I can actually do it properly.

I wanted to provide some feedback the course I have just attended, so here goes.
Firstly can you send my thanks to all the other people as they made the weekend really enjoyable. There is nothing better than being with like minded people and the cheerfulness was infectious.
The instruction was very well structured with one topic flowing, seemingly, effortlessly in to the next. I say seemingly effortlessly as I understand just how hard it is to make things seem simple.
The instructor is obviously a real map reading geek 🙂 and added to that their friendly, enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable teaching style all adds up to a perfect learning opportunity.
I enjoyed being outside and I am glad that most of the weekend was practical. I found the whole weekend, yes even night navigation, really enjoyable. I have never even thought that it was possible to safely and accurately navigate at night time in the mountains. Thanks for the introduction to this exciting (and a bit scary) activity.
I will now try to put in to practice the instructor’s saying “from competence comes confidence” and I will definitely be booking another course with you.

A very good course and I learned a lot in the 2 days. Confidence being the biggest one. I will look forward to seeing you for the silver award, which I have just booked, in a few weeks.
We had a great little group of people whose company I really did enjoy, so thank you all…

Thank you for a fun and informative weekend. From the very start the course seemed well planned without the programme being at all rigid, the whole weekend seemed to flow with lots of time available for going over anything I didn’t get first time. The instructor was brilliant.

Thanks again for a great weekend, really appreciate the help and support and patience explaining contour lines, grid reference and compass navigation in easy to follow dialogue. The instructor has renewed my confidence in my L3 mountain safety exam.
Kind regards.
Website Note – The “L3 mountain safety exam” is one of the modules which must be passed to join the International Ski Instructor’s Association. Candidates must display a high level of off piste skiing, safety awareness and mountain navigation skills.

“Just wanted to say thanks for an interesting couple of days in the Surrey countryside. I found the progression throughout the activities flowed well and was appropriately paced, with plenty of opportunity for practice. I feel a lot more confident about the map reading parts of my future Ski Instructor’s mountain safety course as a result of the weekend course”
Thanks Again

Hi, thanks for the map reading training in Chobham and Windsor (hope the queen didn’t mind all our noise too much). Just want to say that I really enjoyed it and learned loads. The (very patient) instructor was brilliant and very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what he was teaching, he even managed to get me using a compass like you’re supposed to.
Along the corridor and up the stairs, along the corridor and up the stairs – I have been driving people mad by repeating that at home and at work (see I got it in the end LoL).
Please can you pass also on my thanks to rest of people on weekend. Such a mixture of people and it made it more fun just being in such great company.

I just wanted to thank you for running the course over this weekend. It was simply outstanding.
I think that you delivered a thoughtful progression that enabled us to build our skills and knowledge systematically. I think that you have the right balance between allowing us to utilise our navigation skills and providing the right input at the right time to help us learn.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course and would strongly recommend it. I would love to do the Silver NNAS course. Thanks again for doing this course.

I can highly recommend this two day Map Reading and Navigation Course.
The tutor is excellent. He is very adaptable to participants needs, he listens and makes it easy to understand the different requirements of using a map and compass. He demonstrates a wide variety of teaching skills and styles dependent upon the learner. He is interesting and informative and very knowledgeable about this topic. He makes learning easy and quite honestly the time flew by.
Thank you to a great Teacher.
